Environment and Sustainability Week
Gemma Lovering Recreation and Extra Curricular Co-ordinator for Walford and North Shropshire College, has been organising a host of interactive events to mark Environment and Sustainability week and to raise awareness about the many related issues.
Shropshire, United Kingdom, November 09, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Students are being encouraged to submit photos showing examples of the College being environmentally friendly or otherwise, for entry into a competition which will be running throughout the week. Dr Bike, from Maes-Y-Clawdd Industrial Estate in Oswestry, is visiting both campuses on several occasions during the week to offer bicycle repairs to anyone who is in need of them. There are tours of the Walford Campus highlighting the ground-breaking sustainable technology for which the College is renowned and students will be producing their own recycled fashions for a show to be held later in the year.
Of all these, however, the Make-Your-Own-Smoothy activity has proved to be the most popular by far. Here students are being given the opportunity to produce a delicious and healthy Smoothy using a selection of fruits, juices and their own pedal power. Nearly fifty students have taken part in the activity, which has been running over just two lunch hours so far, and many have been astonished to discover just how much energy they have had to expend to get their Smoothies really smooth!
Gemma came up with the idea when she heard that this amazing pedal powered smoothy maker was in the possession of a group called Cycle Shrewsbury which promotes sustainable transport and is managed by Shropshire Council.
Emma Bullard of Cycle Shrewsbury says “October was ‘love your Bike’ month in Oswestry, Ludlow and Shrewsbury and we held a whole series of events to encourage people to choose cycling for local journeys. Oswestry is a new area for us and we’re delighted to have this opportunity to share our resources with Walford and North Shropshire College.” For more information about the organisation people are invited to telephone 01743 255435 or visit the Cycle Shrewsbury website at cycleshrewsbury.co.uk
Gemma says “The Smoothy maker has been very well received by the students and, all being well, we are intending to borrow it again to help us promote Healthy Living Week in the New Year. The other activities have also been well attended and successful in raising awareness of environmental and sustainability issues.”
