Tips for Properly Storing a Classic or High Performance Automobile from Morristown's Shade Tree Garage

Storing an automobile for any length of time can wreak havoc on parts. Proper storage is necessary to minimize the deterioration that occurs over time.

Morristown, NJ, November 09, 2011 --(PR.com)-- When a vehicle is not being used for even a short amount of time, like over the winter, parts can begin to deteriorate. Rubber can dry out and begin to rot, upholstery can mildew, chrome can pit, paint can rust, and batteries can go dead. Shade Tree Garage, in Morristown, provides some important tips for properly storing a classic or high performance automobile. And, if car enthusiasts are in need of indoor storage for their prized vehicle, they can have it stored in a climate-controlled, alarmed facility at Shade Tree Garage’s location at 171 Washington Street in Morristown, NJ.

“When they store their vehicles over the winter, many car owners patiently wait for spring so they can take their first ride. When that time comes, they find themselves disheartened by how the car has deteriorated in such a short amount of time,” states John O’Connor, owner of Shade Tree Garage. “Winter storage, or any lengthy period of storage, can take a toll on a vehicle. That’s why it’s important to take certain precautions when a vehicle goes into storage,” adds O’Connor. Here are a few tips from O’Connor:

1. Give the car a good detailing. Wash the vehicle (including the undercarriage) and give it a good wax. Lubricate all rubber and vacuum the interior.
2. Carefully fill the universal joints with fresh grease, if your car has lube fittings. Pack the front wheel bearings and apply clean grease on all of the steering and suspension fittings.
3. Drain the cooling system (including the radiator) and refill it with a rust-inhibiting anti-freeze.
4. Change the engine oil and filter.
5. Hook the battery up to a charger/maintainer to keep it alive.
6. The vehicle should be stored up on jack stands with the wheels and tires removed. If you can’t store it in that manner, let some air out of the tires to reduce strain on the shocks and other suspension components.
7. Cover the vehicle with a breathable cloth cover.
8. Store convertibles with the top up.

Vehicle owners can avoid the extra work of preparing their vehicle for storage by having it properly stored at Shade Tree Garage in Morristown.
