Delhi Schools Celebrate Earth Day and Create Awareness Amongst the Masses

MoEF Secretary, Dr Prodipto Ghosh facilitate the winning schools at Dilli Haat

New Delhi, India, April 25, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Hundreds of school children of Delhi participated in the Earth Day. The program began with inter school competitions, followed by eco friendly product display and ended with an Earth Day pledge by all present. Earth Day is widely celebrated around the world, as a collective expression of public will to create a sustainable society. Earth Day activities, since 1970, have educated and mobilized people worldwide for environmental protection.

A day that started as an occasion to express concern about the environment, Earth Day has, through the combined efforts of governments, grassroots organizations, and concerned citizens, evolved into a worldwide campaign to protect the global environment. TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) believes that children are the best ambassadors of the message and has, consequently, over the years, involved them in various environment related programs.

The assembled children at the TERI event today pledged to restore the rich bounties of nature by planting trees in schools and neighborhoods; eliminate the differences between the rich and the poor, the rural and the urban, and the privileged and the underprivileged; do their share in saving the Planet by letting their concern for the environment show in all activities; and to create a sustainable environment.

The Secretary, MoEF Dr Prodipto Ghosh facilitated the winners with certificates, cash award, and special momentos. The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, partnered TERI in the event.
