City of Tampa Partners with Enable America to Host Career Mentoring Day for Disabled Veterans

Tampa, FL, November 13, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Demonstrating its support for programs that further employment opportunities for disabled veterans, the City of Tampa is partnering with Enable America to host a Career Mentoring Day this Monday, November 14, with Enable America’s VetConnect program providing real-life work experience for disabled veterans who are trying to return to the civilian workforce.

“The City of Tampa is honored to be a part of the Enable America VetConnect efforts and host a Career Mentoring Day,” said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn. “I believe we cannot do enough for these extraordinary men and women. They have served their nation so bravely and now just want a chance to restart their careers. We thank Enable America for asking the City to be a part of this worthy program.”

Today's tough economy demands a creative approach to finding employment for deserving, work-ready disabled veterans, and Enable America programs are designed to fill that need. Founded by Tampa attorney Richard Salem, Enable America works to improve employment opportunities for all people with life-altering disabilities. In conjunction with Veteran’s day, the organization devotes this month’s programming to serving veterans and wounded warriors who most recently are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Through the VetConnect “Path to Employment” mentoring program, disabled veterans get the opportunity to participate in real-life work experiences that can lead to a job. Enable America matches mentor companies, and government jurisdictions such as the City of Tampa, with wounded war heroes who often have difficulty finding work.

“Our VetConnect, Path to Employment Program, would not be successful without partners like the City of Tampa,” said Salem, Enable America’s CEO. “The City of Tampa understands employment mentoring is the first step in helping many of our soldiers, with valuable skills, get back into the work force. Enable America is truly grateful to the Mayor for his strong support and commitment to helping our disabled veterans.”

During Monday’s programs veteran mentees and the city mentors will assemble at 8:00 a.m. at the Tampa Convention Center for a welcome from Mayor Buckhorn. From there they will break into smaller units, for mentoring and job shadowing opportunities in various city departments. The event is being co-sponsored by Clark Construction, which has long been a supporter and participant in Enable America programs.

Enable America provides many services designed to improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Community and business connection forums bring local leaders, lawmakers, employers and service providers together to learn and share success stories. In addition, Job Seeker Workshops match participants with human resource professionals, who provide individual instruction on how to build a career in a difficult job market.

For these programs and more Enable America was honored with the 2010 Non-Profit Achiever Award by The Corporate Achievers for Individuals with Disabilities (CAAID). CAAID Chairman Chris Rosa said, “Enable America’s disability employee mentoring programs are national best practices that are consistent with our core principles, promoting equal access, opportunity, and full participation of professionals with disabilities in a truly diverse global workforce.”
