New Mexico Mysteries: White Feather and Teresita Published by Outskirts Press
Marlene Chavex Hawkes’ southwestern adventure takes readers through the mysteries of New Mexico’s past as a Pueblo Indian and a Spanish girl deal with shape-shifters, dead spirits and a former Aztec priest to rescue a stolen Christ child figurine.
Rio Rancho, NM, November 15, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Novelist Marlene Chavez Hawkes announced today the release of White Feather and Teresita, A Southwestern Adventure Tale, published by Outskirts Press. In her debut work, Hawkes mixes the mysteries of New Mexico’s Spanish and Indian past as her two intrepid adventurers travel a dangerous trail to retrieve a stolen Baby Jesus figurine and prevent another Pueblo Rebellion.
When a Nativity figurine is stolen, this seemingly small incident becomes a catalyst for future disaster when local Apache Indians are accused of the theft. Fearing an Indian rebellion, White Feather, a Pueblo Indian, and Teresita, a young Spanish girl whose mother was a dancer with a band of gypsies in Spain, decide to set after the actual thieves.
The adventures they undergo and the characters they meet reveal one ancient Southwestern secret after another as these two heroes seek their prey while trying to enlist the aid of the “star people,” the ancient Aztec guardians, for their quest.
Along the way White Feather must escape a hidden village with the help of his long deceased father, Teresita must confront a shape shifter, and Teresita’s mother makes a narrow escape from the Bear Clan by jumping past the jaws of a wild bear and rushing away down a wild river.
As they move closer and closer to the secret chapel where the “bloodletting penitentes” have hidden the Bay Jesus figurine, they must finally encounter a former Aztec priest who has performed human sacrifices and who now wants White Feather and Teresita to explore the cave the holds so many deadly secrets.
White Feather and Teresita is a tour like no other through the mysterious past and dangerous geography of the American Southwest and the dramatic journey of these two heroes makes a bright beginning to this new novelist’s career.
