Salon at Westchester Donates $6,000 in Wigs to The American Cancer Society
Scarsdale, NY, November 17, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The American Cancer Society recently received a donation of 12 wigs valued at more than $6,000 from The Salon at Westchester for its Look Good…Feel Better program.
“Women who are undergoing cancer treatment often lose their self-esteem and get frustrated easily,” said Maribel Palacios-Perez, manager of family and patient services, at the American Cancer Society in White Plains. “Dealing with doctors and having to explain to family and friends what is happening and the changes a patient is experiencing is physically and mentally draining.”
The aim of the ACS’s Look Good…Feel Better program, is to give women the strength they need to feel good about themselves and live as normal a life as possible.
“Most people don’t realize that the effects of cancer extend beyond the patient,” said Palacios-Perez . “Children have to deal with the reactions of friends in the playground, and the stares their mother gets from strangers in the street. Plus, it’s physically draining on the patient to look at themselves in the mirror and see a sick person staring back at them. A good-quality wig lets them see a happy, healthy person in the mirror.”
Ana Evangelista, a stylist at The Salon at Westchester, said good quality wigs are expensive and beyond the reach of many women. “Few people realize how expensive wigs are. A good quality wig can cost hundreds, or even thousands of dollars. As a result, we’re happy to support the American Cancer Society’s Look Good…Feel Better program, because it costs participants absolutely nothing.”
Palacios-Perez said the ACS in White Plains sees two or three people a week, and last year more than 150 women in Westchester received wigs under the program.
Creative Director, at The Salon at Westchester, Michele Errico, said her salon collects used wigs on behalf of recycledwig.org, which donates the hairpieces to organizations in need like the ACS.
“Many women have wigs at home that they no longer use,” said Errico. “It could be because they have recovered from cancer, or purchased a new wig in a more modern style. We take these wigs, restyle and clean them, and distribute them to those in need.”
