William Peace University President Dr. Debra M. Townsley Named Mentor Within NCAA Outreach Program

Leader of Four-Year Baccalaureate University Assists New Division III College Presidents and Chancellors with Insights About Governance

Raleigh, NC, November 25, 2011 --(PR.com)-- William Peace University (http://www.peace.edu), a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced that Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., president of the university, was named a mentor within the NCAA Outreach Program for First-Time Chancellors and Presidents. The NCAA Outreach Program provides new chancellors and presidents of Division III colleges with important information about the NCAA and the management of intercollegiate athletics. The program is designed by the NCAA to lay the groundwork for greater presidential participation in the governance structure. Townsley recently visited and shared her experiences, offering best practices with Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa and agreed to serve as a future resource as needed. Townsley has participated as presenter at the annual NCAA Outreach Program for new presidents at the NCAA Annual Convention for the last two years since its inception.

Townsley became the 10th president of William Peace University in August 2010. Previously she served as president of Nichols College in Dudley, Mass., since 1998, following one year as dean of academic affairs. At Nichols, she undertook strategic planning initiatives to reconfirm the college’s mission, and under her leadership, Nichols grew from 620 full-time day students to 1,150. Prior to joining Nichols, Townsley worked at a number of colleges and universities, including Saint Michaels College in Vermont, Northern Virginia Community College, and Marymount University of Virginia. A native of Florida, she holds a bachelors of science in business administration with concentrations in marketing and management from American University, a MBA from George Washington University, a M.A. in psychology and a Ph.D. in organizational psychology from the University of Vermont.

Quotes:
“It is an honor and a privilege to be named a mentor within the NCAA Outreach Program for First-Time Chancellors and Presidents, and I am pleased to participate representing William Peace University,” said Townsley. “The NCAA favors this outreach in small group settings where participants can facilitate candid discussion on a variety of topics, and I believe such talks provide crucial insights that new chancellors and presidents can incorporate for effective leadership at their own schools regarding NCAA policies. I enjoyed meeting with the president of Grinnell College, and I look forward to contributing whatever assistance is desired by my colleagues in the future.”
