Three new ornamental arrivals have joined the Big Trees, Inc. nursery:
Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum): The Paperbark Maple is widely grown as an ornamental plant in temperate regions. It is admired for its decorative, rust colored exfoliating bark, translucent pieces of which often stay attached to the branches until worn away. It also has spectacular autumn foliage which can include red, orange and pink tones.
Dogwoods (Cornus): Dogwoods are widely planted horticulturally for their ornamental values, and the dense wood of the larger-stemmed species is valued for certain specialized purposes. Their flowers can be flat petals of color in mid-spring from white, creamy white and pink. Dogwoods have simple, untoothed leaves with the veins curving distinctively as they approach the leaf margins. Their small size provides a variety of uses in the landscape, and their appeal extends throughout the year.
Stewartia: An excellent medium-sized tree for all-seasons appeal. Often multi-trunked or low-branching, it has white flowers, similar to Camellia but smaller in scale, which appear in early summer. Its deep green leaves turn blazing red, yellow and purple in the fall. Beautiful exfoliating bark in shades of orange and gray becomes more pronounced as the tree matures.
