Southern California Woman Begins New Plush-Toy Business on CleverCastup.com
Hemet, CA, November 28, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Ashley Cook got the right stuff from her expanded consciousness. She began stuffing handmade cloth dolls known as “softies” about two months ago. Cook calls her first series of handmade softies The Flimflam Artists Collection. Flimflam means “nonsense” or “swindle.” Each character has a unique name and background story that comes along with these toys that may delight young and old alike.
“I got the idea from my universal consciousness,” she says. “I introduced the word ‘flimflam’ into the social group of my consciousness. For the last six months the people in my consciousness have been using the word non-stop. They get off on trying to flimflam me all the time, thinking I am stupid.”
“Flimflamming is easy money,” starts each story. “It’s lucrative and a quick hit.” “Jay,” one of the characters from my consciousness, for example, is considered one of the original Flimflam Artists members. “Jay” flimflams people with his lawyer act. The so-called rhetorician uses his abilities to talk his way out of any tight situation. He would be a muckraker’s best 'partner in crime.” “Jay” is very handsome to all the ladies. Any woman would be lucky to have him. His philosophy is not to harm people but to bring down the corrupt ones vigilante-style.
“The Flimflam Artists Collection is meant to be fun and funny,” says Cook. “There is ‘Rosie,’ who is the talker. Her swindles seem lighthearted but can come roaring out of nowhere like a lion going for its game. ‘Flying Heart,’ an actual heart-shaped softy with wings, is packed with action-laden, problem-solving power. She has friends in high places.”
Cook, 32, grew up in Fallbrook, CA. She got into sewing and making art when she was 12. For the last four years she has been a journalist for local publications in her area. She is currently a struggling freelance writer, who needs a break from all the stress that comes along with her scribe craft. Cook has a B.A. in English from California State Long Beach, and an M.F.A. in creative writing from Antioch University, Los Angeles. Making these soft plush toys has been a relaxing experience for her. She hopes her business will take off and she can do this full-time for a living.
“I was diagnosed bipolar seven years ago,” she says. “My mental illness has been a challenge over the years. Making softies is very easy-going. I hope to get more people involved with my business, do some charitable work, and become a part of the arts and crafts community where I live. I will be selling them at farmer’s markets around the Inland Empire including the one in Hemet.”
The softies run from $5 to $45 each. They can be found on Cook’s blog site at www.clevercatsup.com. Anyone interested in purchasing them can also call her directly at (951) 531-5713 or email ashleyisartsy@gmail.com.
