Homegrown Lacrosse Hires Kara Vier as Women’s Lacrosse Director
Recognizing the ever growing need for year-round opportunities for women’s and girl’s lacrosse, Twin Cities nonprofit, Homegrown Lacrosse has hired Kara Vier as Women’s Lacrosse Director. The addition of Vier represents the nonprofit’s commitment to supporting the growth and unique development needs of women’s and girl’s lacrosse in Minnesota.
St. Paul, MN, November 29, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Staff expansion affirms nonprofit’s commitment to supporting women’s lacrosse in Minnesota.
Recognizing the ever growing need for year-round opportunities for women’s and girl’s lacrosse, Twin Cities nonprofit, Homegrown Lacrosse has hired Kara Vier as Women’s Lacrosse Director. The addition of Vier represents the nonprofit’s commitment to supporting the growth and unique development needs of women’s and girl’s lacrosse in Minnesota.
As Women’s Lacrosse Director, Vier will be responsible for developing and managing the programming and leagues specifically tailored to the requirements of women’s and girl’s lacrosse. Prior to hiring of Vier, the nonprofit’s programming had been primarily focused on boy’s youth, middle school and high school lacrosse.
“While the name maybe the same, the needs and dynamics of the women’s lacrosse community are distinctively different,” said Aron Lipkin, executive director and co-founder, Homegrown Lacrosse. “In order to successfully serve the women’s and girl’s lacrosse, we needed someone who has been involved in the community as both a coach and a player and a passion for the sport. With Kara, we found someone who shared our core values and embodied the entrepreneurial spirit that will drive the growth of our programming.”
Upon joining Homegrown in October, Vier immediately expanded the nonprofit’s off-season league and training programming to include a five-week league for post-collegiate, collegiate and high school players as well as an seven-week boot camp for middle school and high school players.
“I’ve long admired the infrastructure that Homegrown has developed to support boy’s lacrosse,” said Kara Vier, Women’s Lacrosse Director, Homegrown Lacrosse. “I’m excited to work within and outside that structure to develop the programming and create the opportunities for girls to grow as both players and young women.”
In 2012, under Vier’s direction, Homegrown Lacrosse intends on adding girl’s components to its established youth and high school tournaments, leagues, summer camps, leadership development programs and Community Leadership Award. Additionally, the nonprofit is evaluating the potential of hosting a collegiate women’s tournament.
A native of Hastings, Vier began playing lacrosse in high school and had the opportunity to play the sport at the collegiate level at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. As a Center/Middie at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Vier was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 as well as Most Valuable Player in 2006 and 2007. After college she has been an asset to the post-collegiate Minnesota Northstars team which placed second in the Silver Division at the 2009 Vail Shootout. Her field skills, speed, and desire to learn more drove her to participate in tryouts for the 2010 U.S. Women’s Olympic National Team.
An ardent champion for women’s lacrosse in Minnesota, in 2010 Vier helped establish the Ms. Lacrosse Minnesota Award and currently chairs the Ms. Lacrosse Minnesota committee. Since 2010, Vier has been the Varsity Head coach for Woodbury and East Ridge’s High School Girl’s Lacrosse Teams. Prior to coaching at Woodbury, she held head coach positions at Minnetonka High School, Hastings High School, the University of Wisconsin, and Carleton College. She also was an assistant coach for the 2005 Minnesota High School National Team.
Vier holds a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. A Mass Communication major, Vier has held various positions in the broadcast industry including Minnesota Public Radio and North Metro Television.
