Polycrete® Insulated Concrete Forms Chosen for Secure Government Buildings

Polycrete® Big Block™ commercial grade insulated concrete form (ICF) system has been selected for constructing secure U. S. Federal Government buildings. ICFs provide continuous thermal and acoustic insulation, so they are very quiet and highly energy efficient. Studies have shown that heating and cooling costs in ICF buildings are up to 40% lower than traditional structures. ICF walls are also extremely strong and can stand up to hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural and man-made disasters.

Richmond, VA, December 01, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Polycrete® Big Block™ commercial grade insulated concrete form (ICF) system has been selected for constructing secure U. S. Federal Government buildings.

PolycreteUSA President, Bruce Anderson said, “There is currently one secure building project under construction that is using our insulated concrete form system, and we’re collaborating on others still in the design phase. The project coming out of the ground right now was designed by Cornerstone Architects of Richmond, VA. Due to the sensitive nature of the structures, we aren’t permitted to disclose exact locations or specific U.S. Government Agencies involved.”

Insulated Concrete Forms are expanded polystyrene (EPS) forms for building reinforced concrete walls. ICF Blocks are stacked up to form a hollow wall that is then filled with reinforcing steel and concrete. After the concrete cures, the forms stay in place and serve as the building’s insulation. Sheet rock is attached directly to the inside of the wall and brick, stucco or other siding material is attached directly to the outside.

Structures built with insulated concrete forms are completed much faster than conventional methods like stick framing or concrete block.

Insulated Concrete Forms are considered a green building material and they contribute to 35 or more LEED points. LEED is a scoring system used to determining the degree of environmental sensitivity in a construction project. In October, 2010, the General Services Administration mandated that all new US Government projects will be LEED certified. A recent study found that Green government buildings use 25% less energy and have 19% lower annual operating costs than conventional buildings.

“Polycrete® Big Block™ was chosen for these secure buildings because it is the largest and strongest insulated concrete form available in the market. Each form is three times the size of typical ICFs, and it is the only ICF with a continuous web of steel wire mesh that reinforces the EPS panels and prevents concrete blow-out,” Anderson said.

Big Block™ also has patented steel wire cross tie system that makes it easy to manage walls with large amounts of reinforcing steel (rebar). The unique cross tie system allows the concrete to flow freely through the form and makes it an ideal construction method for secure buildings like data centers, communication facilities, police stations and other buildings requiring a high degree of security.

In addition to secure buildings, Polycrete® insulated concrete forms are used for multi-family, hotels, K-12/higher ed., mixed-use, medical, data centers, retail and office buildings. The system is also used for single family residential projects.

PolycreteUSA believes building green must also mean building fast, strong and economical. We are dedicated to making it easy to design, build and own energy efficient buildings.
