Broward Limousine Teams with WGBB, Long Island Cares and the Long Beach High School Wrestling Team to Fight Hunger
Long Island Limousine Company Transports High School Wrestling Team with Radio Host to Sort Food at Food Bank
Garden City, NY, December 04, 2011 --(PR.com)-- While there is often a perception of wealth on Long Island, statistics indicate that 205,000 out of the 900,000 households are classified as low-income with more than 165,000 individuals who live under the poverty line. To date, nearly 300,000 residents – an estimated one in ten – rely on food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency food programs for their nutritional needs.
This week WGBB on Long Island will join forces with Broward Limousines and Long Island Cares in an event to raise awareness to alleviate hunger on Long Island.
On Tuesday night, December 6th, The Long Beach High School Wrestling Team will participate in sorting food at the Long Island Cares Food Bank in Hauppauge. Listeners are encouraged to make a donation to support the food bank.
The event will be hosted by WGBB's on air personality, Halftime Howie of Broadcasting on the Beach Show which airs live every Tuesday Night from 8 to 9pm on WWW.AM1240WGBB.COM
Many of the people who turn to the Long Island Cares food bank for assistance are working, yet struggle to get by. After paying for housing, transportation, childcare and health care, there’s not much money left to put towards food.
“There are hundreds of Long Island families who simply cannot make ends meet and are faced with the realities of hunger,” said Robert MacDonald, President of Broward Limousine in lsland Park, NY. “Many people don’t realize the scope of hunger here in Long Island. The awareness generated by WGBB and The Long Beach High School Wrestling Team will make a tremendous difference in our efforts to fight hunger, and we are deeply grateful for their support.” Broward is providing a stretch Escalade limo to transport the wrestling team from Long Beach High School to the food bank in Hauppauge.
Founded in 1980 by the late singer, songwriter and social activist, Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares provides nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 540 community-based member agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, child care programs, disability organizations, veterans services and more.
“I encourage our listeners to donate whatever they can during this holiday season.” said Half Time Howie of WGBB, “This event will be an eye-opening experience for all of us and we hope to raise awareness for these vital services operating here on Long Island.”
