Marin Services for Women, Inc. Awarded $975K SAMHSA Grant
The 33 year old agency, newly relocated to its original Larkspur location, is a grant recipient in the SAMHSA program offering enhanced addiction treatment to pregnant and postpartum women.
Larkspur, CA, December 09, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Marin Services for Women, Inc. has been awarded close to $975K for its three-year participation in a SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) program to help pregnant and postpartum women overcome addiction to prescription drugs, alcohol, tobacco, illicit and other harmful drugs. Women in the program will learn about having safe and healthy pregnancies and practicing good parenting skills. Overall health, including mental health will be addressed. The treatment approach will include trauma-specific services including reducing involvement in and exposure to crime, violence, neglect; and physical, emotional and sexual abuse for all family members.
“When a mother is misusing alcohol or drugs, the whole family suffers, and if the problem is not addressed in the context of the family it can plague generations to come,” said SAMHSA Administrator Pamela Hyde. “These grants will help local organizations facilitate recovery and preserve and strengthen families in their communities.”
Marin Services for Women has evolved into a leader in its field, offering progressive, comprehensive, gender-focused treatment for women with addiction and trauma issues, as well as co-occurring disorders. MSW provides life skills coaching through a holistic continuum of care and support. Its world-class programs and services have guided thousands of women and their families on the path toward health. It has recently moved from Greenbrae to its original location at 127 King Street in Larkspur, in the former St. Patrick’s Parish convent building.
“MSW is delighted to be called into action with this award,” said Interim Executive Director Cindy Foley. “Our staff is looking forward to serving these women and their families, and receiving the specialized support and training provided by SAMHSA. The work that we do with this grant - in collaboration with other agencies in the community - will improve how Marin County serves the unique needs of pregnant and postpartum women recovering from addiction. The over-arching goal is to break the cycle of addiction in families.”
This grant program is part of SAMHSA’s Recovery Support Strategic Initiative.
