The Arc of North Carolina Presents Roadmap for System Success

Wilmington, NC, May 03, 2007 --(PR.com)-- As the state of North Carolina continues to cut human services funding, The Arc of North Carolina has created a plan with logical, concrete solutions to the problems inherent in the state’s developmental disabilities system. On Monday, May 7, at 6:30 pm, The Arc of North Carolina will present Life in the Community: A Roadmap for System Success at the New Hanover County Public Library, 201 Chestnut Street in Wilmington. This free event is open to the public.

“Our system needs to change in North Carolina,” said The Arc of NC Executive Director, Dave Richard. “Currently, many people with developmental disabilities are forced into a system that is based on the principles of recovery. You cannot recover from a developmental disability. Combining life goals and supports will help people with developmental disabilities lead a fulfilling and meaningful life.

“By incorporating The Arc’s plan, the state will be fiscally responsible and more people with developmental disabilities and their families will receive the services they need without negatively impacting other populations.”

The one hour event will include a panel discussion featuring representatives from the Brain Injury Association of NC, First in Families of NC and the Autism Society of NC. The panel will address the needs of the developmental disability community and explore the differences and commonalities among those with mental health, substance abuse and developmental disabilities. The panel will also explore ways to fund programs that can help provide a more holistic approach to services for people with developmental disabilities.

“A plan like this is more important than ever, as the state pits people with developmental disabilities and their families against people with mental illness, people with substance abuse issues and children to get the supports and services they need,” said Richard. “Collectively, we must give voice to this issue and insist that the state adequately fund all human services programs.”

Families who have a loved one with a developmental disability will share their stories of the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis. In the New Hanover county area, over 200 individuals with developmental disabilities and their families are waiting for services.
