Atlanta Gallery Presents New Works by Jason Craighead

Anne Irwin Fine Art in Buckhead district features Raleigh-based abstract expressionist in May show entitled "Abstractions"

Atlanta, GA, May 04, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Anne Irwin Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta announces a special exhibition in May entitled ‘Abstractions,” which will include new paintings by Raleigh-based artist Jason Craighead. The opening reception will be held Friday, May 11, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Jason Craighead is considered one of the leading abstract expressionists in the Southeast. He is best known for his predominantly large-scale canvases that combine acrylic, oil pastel, and graphite in multiple layers of color, lines, and drips. In his most recent work, including the canvases at Anne Irwin Fine Art, all but random segments of color and line are “painted out” behind thin white pigment, evoking a sense of peering through a veil to discover what lies within. The remaining marks on the canvas, often inspired by elements of the urban landscape, such as construction cranes, serve as records of spontaneous gestures.

The artist describes his work as “a purely intuitive process as I’m acting and responding to what appears on the canvas. Each step leads to another. There’s an on-going dialogue – or argument – between my work and me. It’s very improvisational, and each piece is only a small part of this greater vision—of a whole body of work. I’m going to push it and change it a little every time, but each painting sets me up to do another.”

Jason Craighead joined Anne Irwin’s stable of fine regional artists in December of 2006 after the owner saw his work featured in the fall edition of Art Galleries & Artists of the South.

“Jason's current series on Cranes reflects the incredible energy as cities today are being formed,” Irwin said recently. “His bold, strong brushstrokes reflect that energy. Jason has been able to interpret the rebirth of Atlanta in a very vigorous and lively way. His work has been very popular to those who live in the heart of not only Atlanta, but in New York, and other major US cities.”

Located in the trendy Buckhead business district, Anne Irwin Fine Art was dubbed “one of the hot art spots in Atlanta” by the city’s Museums and Galleries Guide. The gallery originally offered nine of Craighead’s canvases, which ranged in size from 34”x34” to 72”x54”.

“Abstractions” will present the artist’s most recent work and mark his first show in the Atlanta area.

Jason Craighead lives and works in downtown Raleigh, NC. He studied painting while attending Gulf Coast Community College and Florida State University. As a regional artist, he has developed a strong patron base that includes US Senator John Edwards and his wife, author Elizabeth Edwards, along with a host of regional and national corporations and private collectors from Los Angeles to Raleigh. He has received numerous awards and served as a juror for various art shows. He has been selected as Signature Artist for charitable art auctions, and his work has been featured in a number of publications, including Artists & Art Galleries of the Southeast (July 2006).
