Garage Door Specialist Sounds Alarm as Thieves Use Garage Door Openers to Rob Homes
Damian Douglas, owner of Las Vegas based Damian Douglas Garage Door Service says careless homeowners may be making it easy for thieves to burglarize their homes.
Las Vegas, NV, December 23, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Las Vegas garage door specialist Damian Douglas (http://www.damiandouglasgaragedoor.com) says homeowners may be making it easy for thieves to burglarize their homes by failing to protect their garage door remote control.
As police departments around the country report increase in home burglaries through the garage door, Damian Douglas said all homeowners need to do to stop the thieves is know where their remote controls are at all times.
“This is not complicated. All the homeowner has to do is hide their remote control. If possible, just remove it from your car at the end of the day,” said Damian Douglas in Las Vegas this yesterday.
From Seattle to Houston and Nashville Tennessee, police departments say they are seeing an uptick in the number of these burglaries.
"I would say it's more than a coincidence that it's in the same geographical area the same method of getting in the house each time," said Sgt. Cindi West of the King County Sheriff’s Office in Washington State.
To gain access to the homes, thieves would rifle through cars parked in the driveways while families sleep. “Once they have the remote control, it is just a question clicking the button and they are in the house,” Sgt. Cindy West added.
Seattle area resident, Dave Neale is a recent victim. He said the thieves went into his car parked in his driveway, found the garage door remote and in seconds were inside his home where they stole credit and debit cards before being scared away by the family dog. Neale’s family was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom when the incident happened.
"Take your garage door openers out of your car. This is not a new trend. It's happened for years," she warned homeowners.
Damian Douglas said that is a sound advice that Las Vegas homeowners need to heed. "That is all homeowners really need to do to stop these thieves. Take your remote control out of your car. No remote, no robbery," he added.
