Houston Tree Service Specialist Reveals Ways to Protect Young Trees and Ornamental Plants from Winter Damage
Ability Tree Expert’s Louis Flory says winter cold can seriously damage young trees and ornamental plants unless properly protected.
Houston, TX, January 21, 2012 --(PR.com)-- As temperatures dip to single digits during winter nights, Houston tree expert says young trees and ornamental plants need tender care to help them survive.
Louis Flory, owner of Kingwood, Texas based Ability Tree Experts (http://www.abilitytrees.com) says homeowners in Texas and other states need to protect their trees and ornamental plants from the bitter cold or risk losing those plants and trees.
“Cold weather damage to these plants and trees can be potentially damaging. The amount of damage can vary from year to year and depends on the plant but there are many ways to prevent these damages from occurring in the first place,” he said this week in Houston, Texas.
Flory said homeowners should always be aware of the potential damage from bitter cold. “They need to be aware at all times of the danger. The first thing they must do is bring the plants and smaller trees inside the house or inside a warmer area during cold nights,” he said.
He advised homeowners to cover the roots of outside plants to keep the temperatures around the roots warm.
“Cover the roots of the plants in the ground with additional mulch, newspaper or cloth tarps. This will maintain an even temperature around the roots and keep it from becoming very cold. It is also important to water the plants before the first seasonal freezing temperatures,” he said.
The Houston Tree Doctor said another way to help the trees and ornamental plants survive cold nights is to use old blankets and sheets to cover them.
“Using old blankets and sheets to cover the trees and plants will help them stay warm and protect them. Plastic sheets can also be used but care must be taken to ensure the sheets do not touch the tree or plant leaves if they are used,” Louis Flory added.
He cautioned homeowners against tall upright trees damage from wind, ice or snow.
“Tall upright trees can sometimes be damaged by wind, snow or ice and homeowners may need to protect them against these also. Fasten twine at the base of the trunk and wind the twine around the branches. This stops the branches from being weighed down and splitting. Construct a simple windbreak around the plants and trees to stop wind damage.
