ATS Design Services Applying Years of Electronics Cooling Expertise to Tough Thermal Problems

Norwood, MA, January 22, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Design Services group at Advanced Thermal Solutions, (ATS) provides years of thermal engineering expertise in solving its customers’ excess heat problems in telecommunications, networking, medical, defense, embedded computing and other areas. Working with ATS Design Services, clients in these industries get their products to market faster, cooled properly and functioning at the peak of their design specifications.

ATS Design Services achieves consistently excellent results due to their deep design skill set in three areas: mechanical design, thermal design and electrical design.

In mechanical design, the ATS team optimizes the airflow schemes for PCB layouts, cabinet chassis, fan trays, racks and shelves. ATS also designs, prototypes and tests custom heat sink solutions that provide lower cost cooling solutions than other heat remedies.

ATS’ thermal design team considers not only an isolated heat sink or fan tray, but the complete system thermal design. This includes the semiconductor die and package, other board components, complete PCBs and total systems. This approach ensures that the thermal design solution is customized for each product, with the result being safe, cool running products.

In providing electrical design services, ATS develops low cost and efficient solutions to manage fan controllers, PCBs and other electrical devices that are necessary for many thermal management solutions.

A recent project where ATS supplied design services for a U.S. Homeland Security company helps illustrate their capabilities . . .

An electronics design firm contracted with ATS Design Services to create cooling solutions for three electronics enclosures used in outdoor homeland security systems. The rugged enclosures contain multiple sub systems that must be kept within a specified operating temperature range over diverse heat and humidity conditions. Using thermal analysis, computer modeling and airflow simulations, ATS designed effective thermal management solutions for each enclosure. No changes were needed to their external housings.

ATS tested each security chassis to characterize its thermal performance. Several scenarios simulating extreme outdoor conditions were used to determine design changes for acceptable performance under worst case conditions. These included temperatures from -20 to 50°C, relative humidity up to 80%, solar heat loading to 110 Watts per square foot, and an altitude of 5,000 feet.

ATS’ engineers studied airflow and temperature on all critical components, including video cameras, modems and power supplies. Testing in varied temperature and solar radiation conditions showed that sun load was the most significant environmental factor on the internal temperatures. Its effect was four times higher than the power dissipation of the internal electronics. Despite this unalterable source, ATS marginally modified the internal design of each chassis to manage the solar load and other temperature issues, including very cold conditions.

The design service included analytical modeling, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation and prototypes. Changes included adding fans for both intake and exhaust purposes, modifying louver patterns for improved solar shielding and adding internal ducting to optimize airflow. Internal heater assemblies were added for extreme cold temperatures.

“Outdoor electronics usually have severe thermal problems,” said Kaveh Azar, President and CEO of ATS. “An external housing may stand up to the worst environments, but the inside conditions can go far beyond the temperature limits the components are made for. Our thermal labs can simulate the harshest situations, and the ATS Design Services team finds practical ways to resolve thermal problems so electronics will work reliably despite extreme weather.”
