American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure Cycling Event
The premiere cycling event of the American Diabetes Association, the Tour de Cure helps to raise monies to continue research, education and advocacy of the organization. The American Diabetes Association challenges cyclists to take the ride of their life.
Middletown, CT, May 13, 2007 --(PR.com)-- The CT/Western MA office of the American Diabetes Association is challenging local cyclists to dig deep within themselves and un-tap the determination, strength and courage it takes to participate in the 2007 Tour de Cure®, an annual cycling event to raise money for diabetes, the nation’s fifth leading cause of death by disease.
“Many people will participate in the Tour de Cure for the stimulating competition, camaraderie and physical cycling challenge. But the real reward comes in knowing that every mile they ride and every dollar they raise brings us that much closer to a cure for this disease that affects over 20.8 million Americans each year,” said Jim MacFarlane, American Diabetes Association. “With diabetes growing at near-epidemic proportions, the need for funds has never been so great.” he added.
Each year, more than 1 million people are diagnosed with diabetes and this number is expected to rise as our population becomes older, more sedentary and obese.
On June 10, 2007 cyclists from around the state will gather at Gateway Community College in North Haven, CT to participate in the event to raise $220,000 to support research for a cure. They will join more than 23,000 other cyclists and volunteers in more than 85 sites throughout the nation this spring.
Tour de Cure raises funds through registration fees and pledges collected by the cyclists. Cyclists will choose one of 5 different routes aimed at varying athletic abilities to participate in the one-day event. They will join 23,700 other cyclists and volunteers at nearly 85 sites throughout the United States this spring. For registration information please visit www.diabetes.org/tour . For more information please contact Jim MacFarlane at 203-639-0385, ext 3533 or jmacfarlane@diabetes.org .
