Walford and North Shropshire College Students to Visit CERN

A group of fourteen A and AS level students from Walford and North Shropshire College have recently returned from a visit to Ludlow 6th Form College where they met up with fellow physics students to experience a lecture given by Dr John Wilson from Birmingham University.

Shropshire, United Kingdom, January 25, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Dr Wilson who is directly involved with the work of CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, talked to the students about particle physics and the experiments being undertaken in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which has been in the national news so much recently. He also gave a demonstration of the workings of a spark chamber to enable the students to make the connection between particle detection in one of these chambers and the work that is taking place in CERN.

The bringing together of the two Colleges is the initiative of Colin Taylor, Physics lecturer at the Oswestry Campus, who also teaches physics at Ludlow College. As well as wanting to enable the students to benefit from shared ideas and resources Colin believes that the social aspects of these interactions between like-minded individuals are also very important.

Colin says “We will be taking a group of around twenty students, from both Colleges, to Geneva in July this year. Whilst there, the students will be taking part in a behind the scenes visit to CERN. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to see the theory they are learning being put into practice and, since they will be spending a few days together no doubt wanting to discuss all that they have seen, it is important that they have the opportunity to get to know each other in advance. “

17 year old A2 student Bethany Hopwood from Oswestry would agree with that. She commented, “The talk was really enlightening about current affairs in the scientific world. It was also very helpful for us to see how physics works in other colleges and to be given the opportunity to interact with other students interested in the same subject. I’m looking forward to being able to build on these interactions in the future.”
