Nashville Tree Expert Answers Questions About Canker Infestation
Flavio Martinez with Kaily’s Tree Service reveals what Canker infestation is and why you should worry about it infesting your trees.
Nashville, TN, January 27, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Most homeowners either do not know what Canker infestation is or do not take it seriously and that bothers Nashville tree specialist Flavio Martinez, owner of Kaily’s Tree Service (http://www.kailystreeservice.com).
Martinez said this week that if homeowners understand Canker infestation and the damage it can cause to their Nashville trees if left untreated, they will be alarmed.
“Canker infestation is one of the most destructive of all tree diseases. When they affect your trees, you know you have a problem,” he said in Nashville, TN.
The 20-year tree specialist said Canker infestation defers depending on the type and health of the tree, and the type of Canker fungus invading the trees.
“Typical symptoms of a canker infestation usually include dead or dying tree limbs, scattered among normal looking limbs. Limbs can appear dark and discolored when compared to healthy ones. Areas of infected limbs appear sunken in and the bark may be swollen or cracked. The canker fungus, if untreated, will eventually overcome the tree and cause it to die completely,” Martinez said.
“When the fungi begin affecting your trees, it may not be so obvious immediately unless you are vigilant as the homeowner. They usually become noticeable after the damage is done. That is what makes them so dangerous,” he said.
Martinez said Canker do not normally infect healthy trees.
“Most canker infestations do not occur on healthy, hearty trees but on those that are already stressed or weakened. Some common stresses include extreme temperature changes, drought, flash flooding, shock and injury,” he continued.
He said there are many ways to control the spread of Canker on your property including cutting off the affected limbs immediately the fungi are detected.
“Avoid damaging your trees or causing them stress by transplanting. To prevent an infestation be sure to plant your trees in an area that is conducive to the vigorous growth of the tree. The tree should be planted in an area where it is adapted to the soil type, sun exposure and other environmental conditions,” he said.
“Canker diseases can be controlled if it is diagnosed early on. To control the disease, cut off the infected limb or branch. Pruning out cankers can remove a majority of the fungus from the plant, thus reducing the risk of new infestations. If however the canker has affected the main trunk, then the tree most likely will need to be replaced before the fungus spreads to surrounding trees. There are no effective chemicals that are available on the market to control the fungi that cause a canker infestation,” the Nashville tree expert said.
