Illustrated Tales of Old New York: Tell Me a Story Published by Outskirts Press
Artist and author Bea Gold captures in words and paintings not only the intimate world of a young Jewish girl in the old New York of the thirties and forties, but also the zeitgeist of first generation immigrants making their way in the new world.
Los Angeles, CA, January 27, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Painter, woodcut artist and writer Bea Gold announced today the release of Tell Me a Story, Stories from a Childhood in Old New York, published by Outskirts Press. Gold’s collection of thirty-six stories and full color paintings makes up this coffee table art book and personal memoir of a life long gone, but here so carefully remembered and illustrated as to make this volume a universal treasure.
This rich work is a reproduction of the three sets of twelve story and 9” x 12” painting combinations that were shown in Los Angeles at three Silver Lake Art Collective exhibits in 2008 and 2009. Gold combined her experience as a writer with her extensive background as an artist to produce these thoughtful pieces from her memories of growing up in the thirties and forties in old New York, including the experience of the war years at home.
Each story is presented in the changing narrative voice of Gold as she grows from a very young child to a teenage girl, and as she describes an ethnic world of potato latkes and Mandelbrot. Some of the stories are funny, some sad but all speak of quiet, but universal truths. The narrator’s growing understanding of family relations and her ever expanding encounters with the world around her -- and the cast of characters in it -- will strike chords with any reader.
Gold attended the Art Student’s League in New York under scholarship during her high school years and beyond, and after moving to California as a young adult, she became a member of an international on-line woodcut society. Today she writes, does woodcuts and paints portraits on commission.
