Creative Writing Teacher Publishes Adult Students' Poetry Through Worded Write Publishing
The people who contributed to the "Measuring Twine: Poetry With Strings Attached" anthology come from across the country and range in age from 26 to 86, spanning four generations. They have all attended Jim Mitsui's recent classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute; or Arizona State University undergraduate and graduate programs; or Southern New Hampshire University Online; or in high school or workshops.
Surprise, AZ, February 05, 2012 --(PR.com)-- “I don’t think it’s been done before,” says Jim Mitsui, of Surprise, AZ, about this just-released collection of his adult-students’ poems, titled Measuring Twine: Poetry With Strings Attached. "The people who contributed to this anthology come from across the country and range in age from 26 to 86, spanning four generations. They have all attended my recent classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute; or Arizona State University undergraduate and graduate programs; or Southern New Hampshire University Online; or in high school or workshops."
Another thing they have in common is the ability to interest readers who might not typically choose poetry. "A well-written poem can have as much impact as a novel," says Mitsui, and it can be read in just a few minutes. A major mission in his life is to introduce more readers to contemporary poetry--and more contemporary poets to readers. He says today's poetry is more enjoyable and accessible than poems remembered from grade-school textbooks.
The title, Measuring Twine, is borrowed from a poem written by a former Lifelong-Learning student, Steve Weistling, also of Surprise, AZ, who died suddenly in 2009 at the age of 61. Six of Steve’s poems are included among this collection. The 21 other poets are Leslie Admire (AZ); Nancy Bechtolt (CA); Katy E. Ellis (WA); Tyler Fish (NH); Marilyn Haight (AZ); Stacy Hero (WA); Ruth Huber (CA); Alison Kinnahan (AZ); Ellen McGehee (OR); Steph Milligan (NH); Steve Murphy (AZ); Arlene Naganawa (WA); Haran Phaneuf (AZ); Charlotte Saucedo (GA); Virginia Schierscher (AZ); James Seals (CO); Adam J. Settingsgaard (CA); Madeleine Sterkowicz (AZ); Shawna Tews (AZ); Annette Tischler (AZ); and Eleanore D. Trupkiewicz (CO).
Mitsui's poems have been published in over 120 magazines; anthologies; and textbooks; and he has authored four books of his own poetry. He currently teaches Creative Writing and Poetry at ASU West; Southern New Hampshire University; and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Visit his Web site at http://www.jimmitsui.com.
Measuring Twine: Poetry With Strings Attached, edited by James Masao Mitsui, is available from local and online book sellers (ISBN 978-0-9800390-6-1; Worded Write Publishing; 2012; $15.00). Anyone who is interested in life will find a story in this book to which he or she can relate.
