Budding Young Engineers Explore Engineering Construction with the Smallpeice Trust
Leamington Spa, United Kingdom, February 15, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Up to 100 year 9 pupils (aged 13-14) will have the opportunity to learn about engineering in the construction industry this April. National educational charity The Smallpeice Trust is teaming up with the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) to provide a residential engineering course from 2nd – 5th April at the University of Wolverhampton’s Telford Campus.
Engineering Construction is concerned with all aspects of design, construction and maintenance of industrial plants such as oil refineries and chemical plants, as well as the erection and maintenance of structures such as bridges, dams and railways. It plays a vital role in high-profile major public projects such as Heathrow Terminal 5, the Olympic Games facilities and Wembley Stadium. British engineers have always been at the forefront of Engineering Construction all over the world, from building the railways in South America and India, dams in Africa through to iconic buildings around the world today.
Over the four day course pupils will take part in group activities and design and build projects, mentored by real-life engineering construction professionals from leading firms such as Babcock, Foster Wheeler and Siemens. They will explore the world of construction engineering through hands-on workshops and activities and will learn about the wide range of career opportunities for engineers in the construction industry.
Students will also have the chance to develop useful and transferable skills in teamwork, problem solving, project management, planning and presentation. The Engineering Construction course provides a great opportunity for pupils to learn about this exciting field in an enjoyable and challenging manner. About The Smallpeice Trust:
The Smallpeice Trust is an independent charitable trust which promotes engineering as a career, primarily through the provision of residential courses for young people aged 13 to 18.
The Smallpeice Trust was founded in 1966 by Dr Cosby Smallpeice, a pioneering engineer and inventor of the Smallpeice Lathe. Following the stock market flotation of his company Martonair, Dr Smallpeice invested his energy and part of his personal fortune to set up the Trust to ensure that British industry could continuously benefit from his proven design and engineering philosophies: “Simplicity in design, economy in production.”
The Trust is now governed by an eminent board of non-executive trustees and members from a diverse range of engineering, industry, educational and professional bodies.
In the past academic year, The Smallpeice Trust has reached out to 18,175 young people through 37 different subsidised 4-day residential courses and 1-day in-school STEM Days. The Smallpeice Trust has also trained 674 teachers to enhance their delivery of STEM in the classroom.
A strong interface is maintained with industry, education and professional bodies that help to support, promote and develop the courses. Through these relationships the Trust is also able to provide a number of tailored or specialised courses.
