Leamington Spa, United Kingdom, February 16, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Up to eighty 13-14 year-olds (year 9) from around the UK will have the opportunity to take part in an exciting engineering experience this Easter. National educational charity The Smallpeice Trust is running this residential engineering foundation course at the University of Nottingham from 2nd-4th April.
The course which is sponsored by General Physics gives the students the opportunity to see first-hand how engineering can be used to solve real world problems and improve the living standards of millions of people around the world. Students will take part in a variety of hands-on activities and practical projects, working alongside professional engineers. Previous years’ students have worked with engineers from organisations as diverse as Babcock, Jaguar, Rolls Royce and the Royal Navy, among others.
Pupils will participate in a wide variety of group activities such as designing and building projects using a range of techniques, materials and control systems, analysing the characteristics of different engineering systems to find out what makes them effective and applying what they learn to their own projects.
Gemma Murphy, Head of Marketing and Development for The Smallpeice Trust said: “We are very grateful to General Physics for sponsoring this enriching educational experience. Society needs creative, inquisitive problem solvers to help meet the challenges of the future. This residential course opens young people’s eyes to the excitement and the world of opportunity that engineering offers.”
The course also explores the wider role of engineering in the real world with consideration of issues such as innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship, as well as exploring the financial aspects of engineering projects and the importance of working within a budget. Students will also develop useful and highly transferable skills in teamwork, planning, presentation and problem solving.
Places on the Nottingham Engineering Experience course are available at the heavily subsidised rate of £95 including all accommodation, meals, course materials and social activities. The course provides a great opportunity for any pupil thinking about the possibilities of a career in engineering to learn more about the field in an engaging and enjoyable manner. About The Smallpeice Trust:
The Smallpeice Trust is an independent charitable trust which promotes engineering as a career, primarily through the provision of residential courses for young people aged 13 to 18.
The Smallpeice Trust was founded in 1966 by Dr Cosby Smallpeice, a pioneering engineer and inventor of the Smallpeice Lathe. Following the stock market flotation of his company Martonair, Dr Smallpeice invested his energy and part of his personal fortune to set up the Trust to ensure that British industry could continuously benefit from his proven design and engineering philosophies: “Simplicity in design, economy in production.”
The Trust is now governed by an eminent board of non-executive trustees and members from a diverse range of engineering, industry, educational and professional bodies.
In the past academic year, The Smallpeice Trust has reached out to 18,175 young people through 37 different subsidised 4-day residential courses and 1-day in-school STEM Days. The Smallpeice Trust has also trained 674 teachers to enhance their delivery of STEM in the classroom.
A strong interface is maintained with industry, education and professional bodies that help to support, promote and develop the courses. Through these relationships the Trust is also able to provide a number of tailored or specialised courses.
