Advent Air Says Energy-Efficient HVAC Units Save Thousands
Advent Air wants homeowners to reduce energy use, save money with R-410A systems.
Lewisville, TX, February 16, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Since January 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has forbidden manufacturers from producing new air conditioners and heat pumps containing R-22 – the “refrigerant of choice” for residential units over the past four decades. Unfortunately, R-22 is a greenhouse gas proven to deplete ozone and contribute significantly to global warming, according to the EPA.
In its place, manufacturers are now using R-410A, an “ozone-friendly” refrigerant that is significantly more energy-efficient than its predecessor. In fact, newer HVAC units can reduce the operational cost of R-22 systems by 40 percent or more. R-410A systems can achieve up to a 21 SEER rating vs. 13 SEER for R-22 systems. (The higher the unit’s Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio, or SEER, the more energy-efficient it is.) And as the antiquated refrigerant is slowly phased out across the country, prices for R-22 systems have risen by roughly 70 percent.
The bottom line?
“R-22 systems are now much more expensive to purchase, maintain and repair, and they are much less energy-efficient than 410A systems,” says Mike Douglas, CEO of Advent Air. “Unfortunately, consumers have heard little or nothing about this issue, so contractors are still selling R-22 systems because they are a bit less expensive to install. Over time, that disservice can cost homeowners thousands of dollars in higher utility, maintenance and repair bills.”
While Advent Air continues to service all makes and models of HVAC systems regardless of refrigerant type, the company has only sold 410A systems since 2010.
“We believe it’s our duty to educate and inform our customers on these types of issues, which can have a big impact on their future well-being,” said Douglas. “Too many contractors are just looking to make a one-time sale, so they take short-cuts. We view our customers as long-term clients, so we always put their best interests first.”
With utility costs projected to climb each year, the disparity between the energy-efficient R-410A systems and inefficient R-22 systems will accelerate. And as the R-22 refrigerant becomes more and more difficult to find, maintenance and repair costs will likewise increase rapidly. In fact, by 2020, chemical manufacturers will no longer be permitted to produce R-22 to service existing air conditioners and heat pumps.
“While we don’t necessarily recommend that every homeowner replace an existing R-22 system today, especially if it’s less than five years old, we strongly urge them to purchase R-410A systems for new homes and whenever they decide to replace their old units,” concluded Douglas.
