Thermal Matrix Technology Identifies Suicide Bombers Before Tragedy Strikes
Tampa, FL, February 22, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The recent attempt by a would-be suicide bomber to attack the U.S. Capitol is bringing new attention to threat detection technology produced by Thermal Matrix International (TMI). By revealing explosives hidden beneath clothing, this technology can prevent tragedy before it happens.
“It’s crucial that security be able to identify potential terrorists long before they reach their intended target,” said Chris Jadick, VP of Communications for Thermal Matrix. “The ability to see that someone is hiding a threat object such as a plastic, liquid, or gel explosive, and to do so from more than a hundred feet away, gives police the time they need to intervene and apprehend the suspect.”
A 29 year-old illegal immigrant from Morocco, Amine El Khalifi, is accused of attempting to bomb the U.S. Capitol in a suicide attempt last Friday. The U.S. Justice Department says Khalifi went to a parking garage near the Capitol and received what he thought were a suicide vest and a firearm, which he intended to take into the Capitol building. But Khalifi was the target of an FBI sting operation. His weapons had been rendered inoperable, and he was arrested before leaving the garage.
"Today's case underscores the continuing threat we face from homegrown violent extremists," said Lisa Monaco, the U.S. Justice Department’s Assistant Attorney General for National Security.
The attempt at the Capitol is not the first such bomb attempt on a high-value U.S. target. This past September 26-year-old Rezwan Ferdaus, a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, was accused of plotting to bomb the Pentagon and Capitol. Prior to that Somalia-born Mohamed Osman Mohamud was accused of planning an attack in a public square in Portland, Oregon, as thousands gathered for the annual Christmas tree lighting.
“In this incident we are fortunate our law enforcement identified and apprehended Khalifi before harm could be done,” Jadick said. “Now we need to make sure security forces have the technology they need to stop future terrorists, as history shows the likelihood of another attempt. Thermal Matrix products provide this protection, through real-time standoff detection of potential terrorists before they can reach their intended targets.”
Thermal Matrix International is a world leader in technology that provides advance warning of an approaching suicide bomber. Through the power of thermal imagers, the Thermal Matrix ACT Suicide Bomb Detection System is able to provide security forces with an extra layer of detection, allowing them to see what a suicide bomber is hiding beneath their clothing before they can enter a building or reach security checkpoint. Most importantly, the system is able to detect plastic, powder, liquid or gel explosives that metal detectors do not reveal.
Portability and ease of setup are also major attributes to the ACT system. The system is designed to be used by a single operator, indoors or out. With a set-up time of less than ten minutes, ACT is designed for multiple applications in a wide range of environments. In addition, there are no privacy concerns, as infrared imagers are not x-rays, but instead analyze the surface of clothing.
“Today’s news further confirms that western targets, including Americans, are at risk of suicide bomb attacks wherever terrorists can strike,” Jadick said. “The only way to stop the use of suicide bombs is to prove to terrorists that we will stop them before they strike.”
