PRISM International Creates Privacy Plus Certification Program

A new certification program promoting the safe handling of stored information has been created by PRISM International, a trade association serving that industry.

Garner, NC, February 24, 2012 --(PR.com)-- In order to provide market-recognized guidance on best practices to prevent data breaches and enhance the security and confidentiality of client materials, PRISM International introduced its Privacy Plus Certification Program during a workshop on January 24-25, 2012. The program has been in development since 2010.

PRISM International’s Privacy Plus is a self-administered certification program featuring an evaluation checklist of minimum standards. Certification criteria are divided into three areas: administrative safeguards, physical safeguards and technology safeguards. In crafting the certification criteria more than 10 regulatory rules and laws impacting records and information management outsourcing operations were considered, including HIPAA, Gramm Leach Bliley, PCI Data Security Standard, Red Flags Rule, FACTA, FERPA, Sarbanes Oxley, PIPEDA, and the European Data Protection Directive.

Companies must meet all minimum requirements outlined in the certification checklist. In addition, applicants are required to attend a PRISM International Privacy Plus Workshop, which provides an opportunity to review all requirements for certification along with legal and regulatory requirements that prompted the minimum requirements. Practical discussions regarding implementation, technology application and risk management are also covered.

The next PRISM Privacy Plus Workshop will be held prior to the association’s annual conference on May 14-15, 2012, at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, NV. Members and non-members of PRISM International may participate in the workshop and certification process.

PRISM International is a not-for-profit trade association serving companies engaged in commercial records management, secure destruction services, data protection and imaging and conversion services.
