Contemporary YA author shows that teenage girls can be strong and possess no special powers with realistic debut fiction.

Before I Breathe: A Novel, by author Jenelle Jack Pierre, offers teenage girls a realistic African-American protagonist who lives in today’s world.

“With the popularity of dystopian YA novels, teens have not been offered many contemporary, true-to-life narratives. I think that Before I Breathe changes this,” Jenelle said. The debut book will be available February 24 in Amazon’s Kindle store.

Based in a Virginian suburb, Jenelle gives readers a gutsy heroine who decides neither school nor living at home is for her.

“When people ask me what the novel is about, I tell them it’s about a teenage girl who gets swept away with the novelty of first love and ends up making some poor decisions, but she pulls her life together and makes a U-turn. She’s a character that readers will root for throughout the book,” Jenelle said.
