Female Entrepreneurs Leading Economic Recovery Locally & Nationally
Hera Hub, a new coworking space for female entrepreneurs, to share growth opportunities in a round table discussion with Mayor Jerry Sanders on February 29th.
San Diego, CA, February 25, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation recognizes the power of entrepreneurship to lead the economic recovery, and will address the growth of shared workspace in a round table discussion with Mayor Jerry Sanders on February 29th at 2pm. Hera Hub’s Felena Hanson was invited to share her vision for growth through the expansion of workspace and programs for women-led start-ups.
Hera Hub’s launch in August 2010 has created new opportunities for well over 100 women-owned companies, who are now members. Hanson, founder of Hera Hub, states “Shared office spaces are on the rise due to the fact that many business start-ups can’t afford full-time office space. Additionally, many women business owners enjoy the flexibility of working out of their home but still need a part-time space to focus, meet clients, and gain visibility for their business.”
One Hera Hub member, Katie Skow Villarreal, founder of WinePlusTravel.com, notes, “Hera Hub is a great place to take my virtual office. It provides a tranquil, focused work environment, and also allows ample opportunity to build relationships and network.”
There is a special need for feminine workspace as the number of women who are starting businesses has increased steadily over the past couple of years. In fact, women are launching businesses at twice the rate of men.
According to the Census Bureau, San Diego ranks number five in the list of U.S. cities with the most women-owned businesses – right behind New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. As of 2007, (the most recent Census) of the 291,249 businesses in San Diego County, close to 30 percent are women-owned firms - 86,951. Additionally, 81 percent of women-owned businesses don’t have employees, so solopreneurs are a significant segment.
The national and state statistics also confirm these trends. American Express recently released a study showing the number of women-owned businesses grew by 50 percent, well above the 34 percent increase in the total number of businesses. The study shows there are more than 8.1 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. with annual sales of $1.3 trillion and employing 7.7 million people. Further, the report calculates there are nearly 1.1 million women-owned businesses in California — up 54.2 percent from 1997 — as of 2011.
Hanson is excited to share Hera Hub’s explosive growth and continued plans with the Mayor’s office on February 29th. As a testament to the company’s success, Hera Hub is already scouting new locations in Mission Valley and Carlsbad.
