The US Outdoor Store Turns 55
The US Outdoor Store Celebrates 55 Years of Business.
Portland, OR, March 03, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Founded in 1957 by Rob Solomon's great grandfather, 2012 marks the 55th anniversary of Oregon's most popular snowboard and ski shop. When it first started, the Solomons originally sold used government-issue clothing, backpacks and boots. Now the outdoor store has grown to one of the best online retailers of outdoor equipment for snowboarding, skiing, surfing, hiking, camping, climbing and backpacking products. After all these years, it’s still owned by the original family that opened the store more than 50 years ago.
Although the outdoor store has moved its location once, it’s always been based in downtown Portland. The first location of the store was on the corner of SW Burnside and Broadway. Eventually as the outdoor store added more gear and ski brands they out grew their space and moved. So in 1987, the Solomon family packed up shop and moved the store one block down towards Oregon’s famous Benson Hotel. The new location at 219 SW Broadway offered far more space than the old location on Burnside. Now with the first floor of the building and the basement as a retail area the store really began to grow. Rob Solomon, the current owner remembers thinking “that this was maybe too much space!”
He was wrong. By 1990, the Solomon family took over and purchased the entire building, giving them 25,000 feet of pure retail space. Then in 1995, the shop expanded again by blasting through the wall of its neighboring building acquiring an additional ten thousand feet of retail space. The new retail area is now known as the US Outdoor Store Sale Annex which boasts the largest selection of clearance Burton Snowboards, North Face Jackets, Marmot, Spyder, Arcteryx, Mountain Hardwear and Patagonia clothing than anywhere else in the state of Oregon.
