ABC11 Eyewitness News Announces 4th Annual Severe Weather Radio Program

Program Offers Radios Emitting Emergency Information from National Weather Service and U.S. Department of Homeland Security at a Reduced Cost to the Public

Raleigh, NC, March 04, 2012 --(PR.com)-- ABC11 Eyewitness News (http://www.abc11.com) has announced a program to make All Hazard Weather Alert Radios available at a reduced cost to North Carolina residents. Through this Severe Weather Radio Giveaway promotion, residents have the opportunity to purchase a severe weather radio at local Walgreens stores for a reduced rate. The radios, which sound an alarm providing life-saving information from the National Weather Service and the Department of Homeland Security by warning listeners of tornadoes, floods, hurricanes and other local emergencies, will be available to the public for $29.99. Normally these radios retail for $50 or more.

The station is kicking off its 4th Annual All Hazard Weather Alert Radio Program on Monday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Fire Station #14, located on 632 Langdon St. in Fayetteville, N.C. ABC11 Chief Meteorologist Chris Hohmann will host the event. Fayetteville Mayor Pro Tem Jim Arp and Benjamin Major, chief officer of fire and emergency management for the city of Fayetteville, will speak as well about the significance of this program. Other attendees include Bruce Jones from Midland Radio and Nicholas Petro from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service.

As ABC11 is striving to reach the senior population and those with limited mobility to make sure they are protected in severe weather, the station is partnering with the Cumberland County Coordinating Council on Older Adults to give away severe weather radios to participants of In-Home Aide and Meals on Wheels programs. ABC11 is inviting people who need help re-programming their older weather radios to bring them to this event as well.

Since the program launched three years ago, ABC11 has sold or made available nearly 10,000 radios to its 23-county viewing area in the heart of North Carolina.
