The London P&I Club Sets Sail with the Latest Microsoft .NET Technology
Dataline Software has provided The London P&I Club with an economic way of migrating its core business application to Microsoft .NET
Brighton, United Kingdom, March 07, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The London P&I Club is a mutual protection and indemnity association for ship-owners worldwide. Its day-to-day operations are overseen by A Bilbrough & Co Ltd, a dedicated management company. Bilbrough has teams of P&I professionals operating from offices in London, Hong Kong and Piraeus that provide advice and a responsive service to the Club membership.
Bilbrough’s legacy core system was originally developed in 1997 using Centura Team Developer, a technology that the company wished to supplant with the Microsoft .NET platform. This aspiration was driven by a number of factors: a lack of support, the problem of finding skilled Centura developers, and not least the need for it come into line with the other .NET apps within the company.
Bilbrough contacted Dataline Software (http://www.dataline.co.uk), Ice Tea Group’s UK Porting Partner, after learning of their experience in migrating Team Developer applications to .NET.
Ice Tea’s Ice Porter toolkit (http://www.iceteagroup.com/Porting.aspx) has been used by its partners to successfully migrate over 1000 Gupta/Centura applications for more than 500 organisations around the world.
Dataline provided a free initial assessment confirming the feasibility of migrating the system which was found to contain 280,000 SAL items and 110 Report Builder reports. Bilbrough then asked Dataline to carry out a detailed analysis and proof of concept based on their application.
"That convinced us that Dataline’s migration solution offered a much lower-risk, more economic and quicker route to .NET for our system compared to a re-write," remarked Bilbrough’s IT Manager, Rob Magee.
Dataline began the port in April and completed on schedule in September.
"This project followed the plan to the letter in terms of both cost and timescale," commented Magee "and because the process preserved the look, feel and behaviour of the original application, we have not had to retrain our users for the new system."
John Cuthbert of Dataline Software said: "With the application migrated to .NET, Bilbrough is now in a position to take advantage of a wide array of components and resources available to the .NET community to continue its development. We are delighted to have assisted Bilbrough in giving the application a bright new future."
