Atlanta, GA, March 08, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Candidate for State Representative (D-53) Issues Statement in opposition to SB 469.
Attorney Robert H. Patillo II, a candidate for State Representative (D-53) issued the following statement in opposition to Senate Bill 469 which would criminalize the freedoms of speech and peaceful assembly for Workers in Georgia. Patillo stated:
“Today our Constitution is under attack. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives us five fundamental freedoms. The Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Religion, Freedom to Petition and Freedom to Assemble. SB 469 directly attacks three of these five Freedoms.
"[This bill would] relating to labor organizations and labor relations, provide that certain provisions prohibiting mass picketing shall apply to certain private residences; to provide for an action to enjoin unlawful mass picketing; to provide for punishment and penalties...for both criminal trespass and criminal conspiracy; to provide for punishment and fines.
It amazes me that the same Party that wants to 'protect' our Constitution seeks to destroy the rights of worker's and civil rights organizations to protest, march and picket for redress of our grievances while concurrently allowing organizations such as the 'Tea Party' to protest as their actions would not fall under the chapter of this law. As a life long Labor and Civil Rights activist I understand the damage that this bill could do to Georgia's working families and minority communities. I call on all Georgians of good conscience to join me in opposing this bill and contacting your elected officials to encourage them to stand on the side of Worker's and the U.S. Constitution and stand against this bill.”
