The 5th Annual National Conference on Blacks in Higher Education in Atlanta to Address Eliminating Health Disparities
The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education's (AABHE) 5th annual conference, "Healthy Communities through Access, Education, Research and Collaboration," is expected to draw a significant crowd to the Loews Atlanta Hotel on March 22-24.
Garner, NC, March 16, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education's (AABHE) 5th annual conference, "Healthy Communities through Access, Education, Research and Collaboration," is expected to draw a significant crowd to the Loews Atlanta Hotel on March 22-24 because of the impact health disparities has on black communities and the importance of education.
As a major conference representing blacks in higher education, the AABHE will focus on the intersection of personal education, awareness to social justice and the education of healthcare providers. This three-day learning experience will provide innovative and healthy solutions to challenges today's educators face.
"Education is a key social determinant of health disparities," says AABHE President Barbara A. Lofton. "According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there's a significant correlation between educational inequalities and health disparities. This includes inequalities in trained health professionals, research focus and access to healthcare, information and literacy. Once education and awareness are realized, people become empowered to take action on factors that impact them."
"Healthy Communities" highlights include:
● Free premiere showing of "Hole in the Head: A Life Revealed.” This compelling award-winning documentary about how the human spirit can overcome a horrific crime of medical experimentation will kick off the conference and will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the film's producer.
● 2012 Advocacy Awards luncheon, panel discussion and reception. This year's distinguished honorees include David J. Malebranche, MD, MPH, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University's School of Medicine and the Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta; Morehouse School of Medicine President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. John Maupin; and Al Bell, Chairman and CEO of Al Bell Presents, LLC, Chairman of the Board of the Memphis Music Foundation and Chairman of the Board and CEO of Operation KIBO.
● President's luncheon & the prestigious Harold Delaney Exemplary Educational Leadership Award. On Friday at noon, Wayne J. Riley, MD, MPH, MBA, MACP, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Meharry Medical College, will receive the AABHE's highest award as the 2012 leader, champion and advocate for minority health. Dr. Wiley is not only a practicing physician, academician and administrator, he also chairs the National Advisory Council on Minority Health & Health Disparities and serves on the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
● Pre-conference workshops and plenary and concurrent sessions on topics ranging from African-American women's weight loss to securing health-disparity research resources will equip attendees with the tools to become more knowledgeable on the state of black health in the educational arena.
