Hannah Rose Kandel, a Naples resident and student at Eden School, is one of eight artists chosen by the United Nations for their 2012 Autism Awareness Stamp. Kandel’s painting “Crazy Love” was selected as the result of a worldwide search for talented artists with autism. The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) will issue stamps and first day covers on April 2, 2012 in recognition of World Autism Day.

Hannah and her family will join Autism Speaks on April 2 at the ringing of the Opening Bell of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City to celebrate the first day of Autism Awareness Month and World Autism Awareness Day. A live webcast at 9:29 am EST is available at www.nyse.com/about/Video/newsbriefings.html.

On Tuesday, April 3rd there will be a panel discussion on “Delivering Answers through Inclusive International Collaboration” at the United Nations in New York. A reception will follow with Hannah and 7 other artists from around the world whose artwork was chosen for the UN postage stamps.

At age twenty, Kandel has already achieved many of her life goals. Her parents, Dr. Joseph and Merrylee Kandel, started early interventions to address Hannah’s autism when she was fifteen months old. Over time, she learned how to communicate and is now able to speak about her personal experiences. Hannah is working toward earning her GED at Eden School in Naples and plans to attend college. Her hobbies included gymnastics, Irish Step dancing and horseback riding with Naples Equestrian Challenge. By sharing her story, Hannah hopes to help educators teach other students like her.

“I dream that I will become a preschool teacher, teach the little kids and become a Hollywood actress,” said Kandel. “I believe that I will live independently, get married, and have children someday. As my family says, 'Dream it, believe it and achieve it'!”

“Crazy Love” began as a project created by Masterpiece Mixers Paint and Party Studio in Naples, for a group of developmentally disabled adults, as an expression of the love they have for one another and the love they have inside of them. It has become a signature painting for their studios.

The stamps will be issued in three separate panes for each of the three United Nations Post Offices – New York, Vienna and Geneva.
