Artist Invites Public to Engage and Observe the Creative Process
Grand Marais, MN, March 30, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Artist-in-Residence with painter Hazel Belvo, April 9-22 at the Grand Marais Art Colony. Renowned visual artist, Hazel Belvo, will open the artist studio to the community through a daily open house and three public lectures with the intent of dispelling the untouchable mystique surrounding art to build a stronger arts community.
During the fourteen day residency, Belvo will continue work on a series of large-scale paintings. The completed project, which has been in progress for three years, will comprise of twenty-five paintings. Seven paintings from the collection will be on display, two finished, three in process, one with a beginning drawing and one blank canvas.
By exposing the public to a practicing artist via a daily open house from 5-6 p.m. and three lectures to be held on April 9, 16 and 20 at 7 p.m., this project seeks to increase community involvement in the artistic process and transform the art-curious into aficionados by developing a tangible visual language that all ages can enjoy. Belvo states, “I am convinced that an aesthetic education is critical to democracy and…within each individual there is a core connection to art whether in art making or appreciating art intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.”
Hazel Belvo is an artist, master teacher and mentor. Belvo’s impact on the art world is far-reaching, having exhibited nationally and internationally, her work is in many permanent collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Bezalel Museum, the Dewitt Wallace Collection and General Mills. Belvo is a professor emeritus from the Minneapolis Collage of Art and Design and has taught at the Grand Marais Art Colony for 30 years. A longtime advocate for the arts, Belvo is a founding member of the Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota (WARM).
The Grand Marais Art Colony is a nonprofit member-supported art center located in the harbor arts village of Grand Marais. Since 1947, the Art Colony has remained dedicated to its mission of nurturing creativity on the North Shore of Lake Superior by offering a variety of year-round classes, events, exhibits and studio access.
