Parker Poe’s Melanie Dubis Presents to North Carolina School Boards Association School Law Academy
Partner with Raleigh Law Firm Stresses Students’ Right to a Sound Basic Education in Address to State Group
Raleigh, NC, April 01, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Melanie Black Dubis, a partner at Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, has announced that she presented to participants of the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) 2012 School Law Academy at a March 12 program titled “School Law Basics: Student Issues.” Dubis led the event with her presentation on “The Student’s Right to a Sound Basic Education: Leandro and Beyond” and discussed the implications of the case, in which she is lead counsel for the plaintiffs. In the Leandro case, Dubis represents low-wealth school districts in North Carolina who are seeking to receive equal opportunities for education funding. The latest ruling in the case is currently on appeal, and if the decision in favor of Dubis’ clients is upheld, will have major implications for the role of prekindergarten in the State’s obligation to provide the opportunity for a sound basic education for at-risk students in all N.C. counties.
NCSBA’s 2012 School Law Academy provided participants with an overview of student law topics in public schools. Presenters covered topics ranging from student discipline and hearings, legality of single-sex classes and other classroom assignments, and student First Amendment rights. Participating board members received 12 hours of credit and fulfilled their annual training requirements, and participating administrators received 12 hours of continuing education credits.
