He became a beach lifeguard and then continued in the lifesaving business as a firefighter for the city of Oceanside. He was awarded the Civilian Silver Medal from the U.S. Coast Guard for rescuing some people caught in a dangerous rip tide. After raising his family, he was inspired to begin writing.
