The new show Urban Discovery examines the often unnoticed fragments of urban experiences, opening at Artspace Warehouse on Beverly Boulevard April 19, 2012 with an artist reception 5-8pm.
Los Angeles, CA, April 13, 2012 --(PR.com)-- New art exhibition Urban Discovery opening April 19, 2012 at Artspace Warehouse to celebrate unnoticed urban environments in contemporary art. New series of artworks debut from artists Colleen Sandland, Johnny Taylor, Carl Smith, Ashleigh Sumner, Steven M. O'Connor and Clara Berta.
Art and nature has always been a source of inspiration for Los Angeles artist Colleen Sandland. Exposed to the details in nature, in a childhood home saturated with plants and flowers, has given her the visual ornaments that reveal the secret language in her paintings. Colleen uses bold and vibrant color trios to draw the viewer in.
Colleen categorizes her latest series of artworks as Neo Impressionistic Florals. Her flowers represent ultimate femininity and beauty, and the struggle in between. The bleeding flowers are a sign of the conflicts that women face in society. The drippings stand for the pitfalls of beauty that lead to the question: What really is beauty?
"The media portrays our purpose in life to look good on the exterior. It is a superficial idea that is contrary to our internal beauty. People tend to judge appearance based on rules rather than observation. The significant media impact on gender roles and stereotypes can subconsciously affect a person's judgment. My paintings are a pure aspect of beauty, and the struggle of what we should all lean toward in life: True Beauty is Inner Peace." - Colleen Sandland
Artist Carl Smith was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In his early twenties Smith began his college education at San Francisco Art Institute, but eventually transferred to Cooper Union in New York, where he graduated in 2001. Studying under David True and Frank Stella at Cooper Union he refined a limited palette and an economical means of representation to express a variety of themes.
Carl combines his own photographic material with drawings and other fragments of narrative imagery. Carl blends several layout revisions before creating a finished image. From this image, he selects and transmits specific parts onto a canvas in a screen printing process and further completes his works with oil paint.
