MPRO Produces Video for YouTube About the Consistent Assignment Staffing Model in Nursing Homes
MPRO, Michigan's Quality Improvement Organization, has produced a video about three Michigan nursing homes who have implemented the consistent assignment staffing model. The video includes interviews with the nursing home staff and residents. The nursing homes are located in Jackson, Rochester Hills and Tawas City Michigan.
Farmington Hills, MI, April 21, 2012 --(PR.com)-- MPRO produces video about nursing homes using consistent staff assignment model.
Over the last few years, a shift has been occurring in the way nursing homes schedule their staff, and though this may sound like a subtle change, this move toward a "consistent assignment" staffing model is having a profoundly positive impact on both the nursing home staff and the residents they serve.
“Consistent assignment is quickly becoming a hallmark of quality care in nursing homes,” says Audrey Stob, RN, CPHQ, MPRO Quality Improvement Coordinator. “The adoption of this model is driving up satisfaction for the residents and for the staff, and at the same time is driving improvements in clinical outcomes.”
According to Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes, a 6-year-old national campaign aimed at improving the quality of nursing home care, consistent assignment means that residents see the same caregivers (registered nurse, licensed practical nurse or certified nursing assistant) almost every time they are on duty. Many residents are more comfortable with caregivers who know and understand their personal preferences and needs. Consistent assignment is primary assignment.
“Nursing homes that begin using consistent assignments might have to change the way they manage staffers but,” says Mary Jane Koren, a physician, geriatrician and chair of the Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes Campaign, as well as a vice president at the Commonwealth Fund, New York. “After the initial startup, they often find the new way is a better way: They often catch medical problems in the early, treatable stages.
“In the end, nursing homes that adopt consistent assignment reduce staff turnover and that work to improve other quality measures gain something priceless: They'll have a facility that fosters strong relationships between caregivers and residents, and offers the highest standard of care.”
In order to capture some of the challenges and successes related to the implementation of the consistent assignment staffing model, MPRO went on the road to visit facilities in Jackson, Rochester Hills and Tawas City Michigan. The video features interviews with several staff and residents and tells the story of the impact this staffing model is having in the industry.
