Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. Wins the Virginia Low Impact Development (LID) Design Competition

Three Employees from Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) Took Home the Top Prize for the Virginia Low Impact Development (LID) Design Competition (Urban Infill Category)

Williamsburg, VA, April 21, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG), a local environmental consulting and engineering firm, is pleased to announce three of their employees competed in Virginia’s inaugural Low Impact Development Design Competition and took home the top prize in the Urban Infill category. WEG’s staff participants included Alex Forasté, PE, Daniel Malone, LA, Daniel Treese, EIT, with additional review by Glenn Muckley, PE. The competition went through two rounds of judging, culminating in a “lightning round” presentation last week at the Environment Virginia Symposium in Lexington, Virginia – where the WEG team won the top prize in their category.

The Virginia LID Design Competition is a joint project of the James River Association, Friends of the Rappahannock, and the Potomac Conservancy. The purpose of the Competition, funded by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), is to challenge teams of development professionals to demonstrate cost-effective and innovative approaches to stormwater treatment on development sites. A real-world project was chosen and WEG’s team used their experience and knowledge to create a low impact development design, as an alternative to a conventionally designed plan, that was cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing.

The WEG team’s LID solution used biofilters, a rainwater harvesting strategy/cistern, increased tree canopy cover, and native plantings to create their award winning design. The rainwater harvesting system was incorporated to meet stormwater objectives, while also providing a non-potable water supply to buildings on-site, effectively integrating the two functions and introducing cost savings. The award (a $15,000 check) was presented at the Environment Virginia Symposium held at VMI (Virginia Military Institute) last week. WEG was also presenting and exhibiting at this event which focused on environmental improvement, cost-savings, and efficiency through collaboration and innovation.

“It is so exciting to have WEG win this award in its inaugural year, and we appreciate the dedication of our staff members that participated. For their design to have been selected by an esteemed panel of Virginia leaders from the public and private sectors validates our commitment to providing innovative and high quality engineering and environmental consulting services to our clients,” said Ron Boyd, President and co-founder of WEG.
