ACT Global and AvTurf Complete Landmark Aviation Synthetic Turf Project
United States Air Force Academy project is world’s largest aviation turf installation.
Austin, TX, May 06, 2012 --(PR.com)-- ACT Global Sports and partner AvTurf recently installed a synthetic aviation turf surface at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. At 1.4 million square feet, the project is the world’s largest single area of synthetic turf of its kind.
The project was initiated following the Air Force Academy’s recent investment in a new fleet of TG-16 sailplanes. Vibrations during landing, ruts and depressions can cause harm to the fiberglass in the planes, which is amplified on the natural grass landscape. The firm, durable artificial turf reduces these hazards and greatly improves the life expectancy of the fleet. The surface also shortens the recovery and restaging time between flights and allows landing of more gliders at a time.
AvTurf’s synthetic aviation turf provides several safety and operational advantages over natural grass. The use of AvTurf aids in preventing erosion, wildlife management, reduction of foreign object debris/damage, increased water drainage and reduced maintenance. The Federal Aviation Administration has also identified AvTurf as a tool to alleviate visibility issues for pilots during aircraft movements.
John Baize, director at ACT Global, says his team is honored to be a part of such a memorable and successful installation. “We are proud to have been chosen to work on such a prestigious project as a training runway for the Air Force Academy,” said Baize. “They are training our future ‘leaders of character’, and our team worked in difficult winter conditions to ensure we have met the stringent quality, project and deadline standards of the Academy.”
According to the Air Force Academy, the airfield “averages more than 17,000 sorties and 5,700 hours of combined flight time per year.” ACT Global once again utilized a durable, UV-reinforced grass fiber from Bonar Yarns. ACT Global has worked with Bonar Yarns as a trusted supplier and technology partner for several other AvTurf installations and high-profile sports and landscaping installations around the world.
