In-Mold Polyurethane Gelcoats from Bayer Stand Up to Mother Nature
Indianapolis, IN, May 10, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Styrene and unsaturated polyester gelcoats have traditionally been used for such demanding outdoor applications as transportation, marine and wind energy, among others. However, composite parts fabricators have been seeking a gelcoat that not only stands up to Mother Nature but is also more environmentally friendly. Polyurethane gelcoats are a viable solution.
Polyurethane gelcoats built on Bayer MaterialScience LLC’s Desmophen® NH and Desmodur® N technologies provide excellent weather, impact and abrasion resistance, compared with traditional gelcoats. With polyurethane gelcoats it is possible to tailor the chemistry to achieve each application’s desired cure speed. In-mold polyurethane gelcoats are also inherently free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Additionally, polyurethane gelcoats exhibit improved crack resistance, resulting in fewer reject parts during the de-molding process.
“Customization of cure speed and superior weathering properties make polyurethane gelcoats a great choice for composite parts to be used in outdoor applications,” says Dr. Ed Squiller, business development director, Bayer MaterialScience LLC.
He continues, “End-use applications, including wind energy blades, automobiles and heavy-duty trucks, capitalize on the customizable chemistry and excellent outdoor weathering performance of polyurethane gel coats.”
