Bayer Advances the Industrial Coating Cure… Enhancing Performance with Thermally Cured Polyurethane Dispersions

Indianapolis, IN, May 11, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Industrial coatings built on one-component, thermally cured polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) are preferred in demanding applications, because the coatings’ unique chemistry imparts superior impact resistance, solvent and water resistance, and appearance. These properties make the technology attractive in industries that require stable and durable paints, like automotive, construction, appliances and agriculture equipment.

Dr. Raymond Stewart, senior scientist, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties business development, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, recently discussed the opportunities and benefits associated with coatings formulated with PUDs used in continuous, high-speed OEM applications during his presentation, “1K Thermally Cured PUDs for Industrial Coatings Applications,” at the American Coatings Show (ACS), currently taking place in Indianapolis.

During his presentation, Dr. Stewart explained that the various combinations of a polyol, polyisocyanate and blocking agent determine the functionality of this technology. Various combinations of polyol and polyisocyanate control the final film properties, and the choice of blocking agent controls the cure temperature.

Dr. Stewart presented the benefits of the latest advances in polyol/blocked polyisocyanate chemistries, and reviewed the curing chemistry and unique polymer design for both polyol and blocked polyisocyanate components required for desired performance characteristics. “The coating products based on this PUD technology require resistance to mechanical wear, weathering, solvents and chemicals; thus the chemical makeup of this technology is extremely attractive,” said Dr. Stewart.
