Response to Kate Snow’s Report More Girls Suffering Sports-Related Concussion from NBC’s Today Show May 9, 2012

Boston, MA, May 13, 2012 --(PR.com)-- In light of the powerful story aired May 9 on NBC’s Today Show, Taylor Twellman’s ThinkTaylor foundation is issuing the following statement:

With each passing day, it becomes abundantly clear the toll concussions are taking on athletes of all ages. The impact is seen from coast-to-coast and doesn’t discriminate based on age, gender, income – even sport. The days are behind us for believing concussion is something that can be “played through” and is only typically seen in high impact sports like football. Concussions affect not only athletes, but children and adults in normal, everyday life.

The story has special significance for Moochie Twellman for whom concussions hit close to home with the multiple on-field injuries incurred by her son, former MLS player with the New England Revolution and ThinkTaylor founder, Taylor Twellman, “As I listened to the report on ‘girls concussions’ on the Today Show, my heart aches for them. I understand. I think about Taylor’s injury every day. It has changed our lives.”

Taylor notes, “I played through until I couldn’t play any longer. That decision not only put an early end to my MLS career, but impacts me on the most basic levels in every day life.” He continues, “The fact that high school athletes are seeing an end to their careers at this early age due to concussion is gut wrenching. It’s time to be smart about protecting our brains – and our young athletes. It’s the goal of this foundation to make sure steps are taken to better document, diagnose and prevent concussions so the athletes of tomorrow don’t suffer the consequences of too little knowledge.”
