History of Transaction:
Transaction began in 1962 as part of a multiplex grant sponsored by the Ford Foundation at Washington University in St. Louis. From modest beginnings as a groundbreaking social science magazine Transaction: Social Science and Modern Society—later Society—Transaction Publishers evolved as a full fledge publisher of books, journals and eBooks to become the "Publisher of Record in International Social Science." In 1969, Transaction relocated to Livingston College, on the Kilmer campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ. A central factor in the success of Transaction is its positive relationship with Rutgers University. It has had the firm support of four presidents: Mason W. Gross, Edward J. Bloustein, Francis L. Lawrence, and currently Richard L. McCormick. The Transaction mission with respect to the University has been, and continues to be, the enhancement of its social science and public policy capacities. Many editors, authors, and advisors are drawn from the faculty. Close to 200 faculty members have been authors and editors of Transaction books.
Transaction acquired Aldine Publishers in 2004. Its journals were divested to Springer Science and Business Media in 2007. It acquired significant book lists from Precedent Publishers (2009) and the Rutgers Center for Urban Policy Research CUPR (2011).
Transaction has strong ties to the traditional mission of American university life as a center of learning, and to the applied needs of public and private institutions in social research. Through its many publications, Transaction promotes mutually beneficial exchanges between the interrelated worlds of academic and professional life. Transaction has published more than 6,000 titles, with more than ninety percent still in print.
Transaction’s reputation as a publisher of excellence is well documented. Richard Abel, founder of Timber Press, Amadeus Press, and the former Blackwell North America, said of Transaction’s offerings: "Transaction has issued a superb list―one of the finest in the world of English language publishing." Carl Gershman, president of the National Endowment for Democracy, noted that "the empire of truth and information that Transaction has built is a tremendous accomplishment."
Irving Louis Horowitz, founder of Transaction Publishers, encapsulated the company’s mission: “The purpose of Transaction is to serve with honor and distinction both the eternal aims of the human race in its search for truth, and the endless variety of ways of anticipating and achieving such goals.”
