A Gathering of Young Men Launches Annual Freedom Run for Juneteenth
A Gathering of Young Men is launching an annual Freedom Run, to be held each year around the Juneteenth celebration in Nashville, TN.
Nashville, TN, May 24, 2012 --(PR.com)-- “Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States,” according to Juneteenth.com, and a newly formed youth-lead cooperative called A Gathering of Young Men plans to take the lead in creating an annual Freedom Run for the residents of Nashville, TN and surrounding cities.
A Gathering of Young Men is a monthly event where young men come together in a safe environment to talk about issues that are pertinent to them, develop solutions and plan for a healthy future for themselves and their community.
Marc Anthony Peek, the group’s leader says, “As we all know, freedom has never been ‘free’ or without obstacles. Not unlike any other plight for freedom, the 2012 Freedom Run is a 5k run with obstacles. For some it will be a pure 5k Run/Walk with only the obstacles of endurance, heat, need of hydration, etc. For those who choose to accept the challenge of the Chariot Race, the obstacles will be more intense and rewarding.”
Juneteenth.com says, “Across the country, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.” It is a holiday marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings, and now in Nashville, it will be marked with a Run for Freedom.
“This event is all about freedom and people gaining their basic human rights, which is very important to everyone,” says Rev. Brian Fesler, pastor of the Church of Scientology and a supporter of the event. “We want to make our community aware of the significance of Juneteenth and the ever-present need to work to keep the freedoms we have won while moving forward.”
