Brooklyn Industries Builds Newest Store in Greenpoint Using 98% Recycled Material
Six sheets of sheetrock was the only material needed to open up the fourteenth Brooklyn Industries retail location.
Brooklyn, NY, May 24, 2012 --(PR.com)-- This weekend, Brooklyn Industries opened its fourteenth store in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Continuing the brand’s commitment to sustainability, only six sheets of sheetrock were purchased for the construction of the store. The Brooklyn Industries’ team built the fixtures from upcycling their own shipping pallets and using found vintage objects and tables.
The store will be powered by 100% wind power and will feature a BKI museum and transitional art installations.
The store also brings the brand back to its roots. Fourteen years ago in 1998, Brooklyn Industries started in a factory five blocks from the new Greenpoint store making bags from recycled billboard material. Further, one of the first T-shirts that Brooklyn Industries designed was in support of a Greenpoint environmental group that fought successfully against the construction of a new power plant in the neighborhood.
Founder Lexy Funk comments on the new store:
“I lived in Greenpoint for several years when we first started Brooklyn Industries on the edge of Williamsburg. The neighborhood has struggled for years with environmental concerns. It is now beginning to win the battle. From a rooftop garden to sustainable businesses to a new pool, the community is really helping Brooklyn. We hope that by opening a store, we can help to contribute positively to the neighborhood.”
Brooklyn Industries’ Greenpoint is located at 658 Manhattan Ave Brooklyn, NY 11222.
