Almost half of the passengers who booked a flight on Bravofly.co.uk are only going for weekend breaks with the majority of those either staying put in the UK by heading down to London to join in the Jubilee celebrations or making the short trip across the Irish Channel. After the dank and dreary weather of April looked like causing a bank holiday washout, many decided to extend the Bank Holiday weekend even further to have a week-long break in the sun or the hustle and bustle of a European city.
With a wide range of cheap flights available up until the last minute travellers are flooding to the Spanish resorts of Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona. These are popular low cost destinations along with city breaks to Dublin, Belfast and Rome and are available for an average of €81 (per segment per passenger) and continue to remain top travel destinations for the UK market.

Most popular destinations
This extended bank holiday weekend has seen many celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in their own way, whether it be in one of the party capitals of Europe, Dublin, or its next door neighbour, Belfast. Both have been booked for an average of approximately €50 per segment per passenger whilst for a similar amount you can reach both Rome and Malaga.
Staying with Spain, the resorts of Barcelona and Alicante were reachable at an average cost of €84 and €107 per segment respectively.
Traveller Types
Bravofly has discovered that those who travelled from the UK were mainly either couples or single travellers. Of the 42% who travelled as a couple Ireland was the most popular destination with Dublin and Belfast being joined on the podium by Edinburgh whilst the top city for the 33% single travellers was Budapest.
The Airlines
Looking at the data compiled for the Diamond Jubilee period, bookings show that low cost airlines continue to dominate (71%) compared to the more traditional airlines (29%). This is an increase of 6% from those who travelled with low cost airlines during the Easter holidays this year.
Duration of Trip
Due to both the extra bank holiday (with the opportunity to take a longer break without using precious holiday days) and the recent rainfall of April huge numbers of travellers have been making the most of this. Of those who booked from the UK through Bravofly the majority chose to take a long weekend break, with 45% spending an average of 3 days on holiday and an average of €77 per segment per passenger. The next highest figure was the 30% who opted for a whole week’s holiday, taking advantage of the fact that they will only have to take 3 days off work and only spending €118 per segment per passenger. The most popular day of departure for those staying for the weekend is Friday (40%) whilst 37% leave on Saturday for a week-long holiday.
